GENERAL

Do I have to qualify to race at the Open Age-Group races?
No, you DO NOT need to qualify in order to participate in any Open Age-Group race.

Are the 2016 ITU Triathlon World Championships the first international triathlon event ever organized in Cozumel?
Quintana Roo state has been selected for the third time to organize the 2016 ITU Grand Final and Age Group World Championship. We hosted the ITU World Championships in 1995 and 2002. The Island of Cozumel has been the host of the ITU World Cup event for 3 years in a row. Along with these events, for the past 8 years Cozumel has also hosted several Age Group races in Sprint and Olympic distances, half and long distance triathlons and kids triathlons, consolidating itself as the capital of Triathlon worldwide. We simply call it TRILAND!!!

Where can I buy tickets for the grandstands?
There will be more than 3,000 free grandstands!

Will I be able to buy food at the Fonatur Marina?
Yes, there will be a shaded food court for your convenience.

REGISTRATION

Can I participate in the OPEN events (Sprint or Standard distance) eventhough I am competing in Age Group World Championship (Sprint or Standard distance)?
Yes you may.

Can I request a refund if I registered for the World Championships or Open Age-Group race but can no longer participate?
Sorry but there are no refunds.

If I can no longer participate in the World Championships or Open Age-Group race that I registered, can I transfer it to a friend?
Entry fees are non-refundable and may not be transferred.

When will the Age Group Managers Briefing take place?
The Age Group Managers Briefing (Aquathlon, Sprint, Standard) will take place on Tuesday September 13th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

When will the Age Group Aquathlon Registration take place?
The Age Group Aquathlon Registrtation will take place on Tuesday September 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

When will the Age Group Sprint Registration take place?
The Age Group Sprint Registrtation will take place on Tuesday September 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday September 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

When will the Age Group Standard Registration take place?
The Age Group Standard Registrtation will take place on Thursday September 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday September 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Do I need a visa to travel to Mexico?

If I need a VISA to travel to Mexico, how do I get it?
There are several steps you need to follow to apply for a VISA. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary depending on where you apply. Please consult the instructions available on the Mexican Embassy or Consulate website where you will apply.

How can I get a letter of invitation to apply for a VISA?
If you require a letter of invitation to apply for a visa please contact info@triatlon.com.mx and provide a photocopy of your passport and the following information:

What is the closest airport?
The International Airport of Cozumel is less than a 5-minute drive from the downtown area. These are some of the airlines that fly TO and FROM Cozumel: United Airlines / Continental Airlines, US Airways, Delta Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Mayair (Cancun-Cozumel-Cancun Air Shuttle), Aeromexico and Interjet.

It is better to fly directly to Cozumel. There are direct Flights from: Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Dallas, Denver, Miami, Mexico City.

If there are no direct flights available you may fly to Cancun and then you can get to Cozumel either by ferry or take a 20 minute flight with Mayair to Cozumel http://www.mayair.com.mx.

How do I take the ferry from Cancun to Cozumel?
From the airport of Cancun you need to take a bus to Playa del Carmen – a 40 minutes ride. Once in Playa del Carmen you take the ferry to Cozumel – a 30 minutes ride

Is the ferry ticket included in registration?
We are still arranging all the negotiations needed so the ferry would be included for all the athletes (at least on that day) and maybe some other discounts. We will know more as we come closer to the date of the event.

What is the cost and schedule of the ferry trip?

Are they going to have additional ferries running that day in case athletes miss one or can’t make the scheduled ferry?

Do you know of any neat areas in Cozumel that we could use as a photo backdrop?
There are many options for example:

Can I send my bike to event?
TriBike Transport (TBT) is the oficial bike transportation of the ITU Grand Final Cozumel 2016. The will help ease the logistical challenges and exorbitant costs of transporting bikes to and from events via airlines or ground freight. WEATHER


What is the expected air temperature for the event?
On average, the island temperature is a blissful 80 degrees. The summers are slightly warmer, ranging in the mid 80s to 90s and the winters cool to the mid 70s.

What is the expected water temperature for the event?
It’s always a beach day in Cozumel, as the water ranges from a warm 77 to 82 degrees throughout the year.

Should I pack a wetsuit for the race?
No, you should not pack a wetsuit.


 

RULES AND EQUIPMENT

What is the minimum race age?
In the World Championship juniors sprint is 16 to 19 years old. There is an Age Group cathegory 18 to 19 years old (both sprint and olympic distance). The Under23 is 18 to 23 years old and Elite athletes must be over 18 years of age.

Will wetsuits be allowed?
No they will not be allowed.

SWIM

BIKE

What type of terrain is the bike course? Is it flat or hilly?
The course is flat.

RUN & FINISH

Where is the finish line located?
It will be located at the Fonatur Marina.

TRANSITION


Where is transition located?
It will be located at the Fonatur Marina.

Will athletes be able to take their bikes out of transition are to warm up on race morning?
Athletes will not be permitted to remove their bikes from transition to warm up.

Can I leave a bag in transition?
Athletes can not leave baggage in transition. There will be nearby wardrobe where you can leave your baggage.

Will there be bike pumps or mechanic support near transition?
Official race mechanics will be in the transition area to help with basic bike needs on race day.

 

SPECTATORS AND FANS


Will the course be spectator friendly?
Yes, the course will be spectator friendly. You will be able to watch closely the Age Group race and particularly the elite competition.

Is there a charge to watch the elite men’s and women’s races?
No, both races will be free of charge. There will be more than 3,000 free grandstands!

What type of spectator amenities will be available?
Inside the Fonatur Marina Triathlon Park you will find a shaded food court for your convenience.

 

EXPO, OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES


Will there be an Expo?
Yes, inside the Fonatur Marina Triathlon Park you will find a food court for your convenience.

Is the opening ceremony on the island of Cozumel? Or will athletes need to take a ferry to the mainland?
The opening ceremony will  be on Cozumel island, at the Benito Juarez Square. (In front of the Ferry Terminal)

Are meals being served at the opening and closing ceremony?

 After the parade of nations there will be a Carbs dinner in Cozumel. At Playa Mia beach club

On the closing ceremony there will not be meals served, only music and a show.
